The Benedict Cumberbatch-shaped hole in the Edinburgh Television Festival’s Sherlock Masterclass has finally been filled. The star will join the show’s co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, along with producer Sue Vertue and director Paul McGuigan, on the panel on Friday 24 August.
The team will discuss how the show was conceived and how it maintains its appeal to both Sherlock Holmes aficionados and its wider audience. The panel also promises revelations about the forthcoming series, which follows on from the season two cliffhanger that left fans furiously debating how the detective survived a leap from the top of St Bart's Hospital.
Other shows receiving the Masterclass treatment at the festival include Channel 4's school-set observational documentary series Educating Essex, the BBC's leftfield children's programme Horrible Histories and transatlantic imports including Modern Family and Homeland.
The three-day Media Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival runs from Thursday 23-Saturday 25 August and also includes the Channel of the Year Awards, which are voted for by delegates. Sherlock, Homeland and Educating Essex are all among the nominees in the Terrestrial Programme of the Year category, with Sherlock looking to win for the second year in a row.
Elisabeth Murdoch, founder of television production company Shine Group and a director of the festival, will deliver the keynote James MacTaggart lecture.
