Round and Round the Garden like a Teddy bear - お庭をぐるぐる

シリーズ1第3話「The Great Game/大いなるゲーム」で、地球が太陽の周りを回っていることを知らないなんて、とジョンに言われるシャーロック。

「小学校で習う事だろう？！」と呆れるジョンに、シャーロックは頭をピコピコと横に振りながら苦々しげに言います。

Oh hell, what does it matter?! So we go round the sun - if we went round the moon or... round and round the garden like a teddy bear, it wouldn't make any difference.

テディベアが庭の周りを…なんて、シャーロックにしてはかわいい事を言うと思ったら、これは「Round and round the garden」という英語の童謡、手遊び歌からの引用のようです。

Round and round the garden
Like a teddy bear.
One step, two step,
Tickle you under there.

Wikipediaによると、作者はAlan Ayckbourn。子供の掌に指先で円を描いて、一歩、二歩と指を進めて最後にくすぐってあげる遊び。シャーロックも子供時代、こんな風に遊んでもらったのでしょうか(いまいち想像できませんが、ナニーがやってくれたかも？)

「だけど、太陽系なんだぞっ！」とツッコむジョンは間違っていないと思います。けれどそんな一般常識、シャーロックのHDDには保存不要事項ということで。。。
